Astronomers have made a remarkable discovery, identifying the universe’s largest water reservoir, estimated to be a staggering 12 billion years old. This immense body of water is floating in space, encircling a colossal feeding black hole, far beyond our reach on Earth.

Researchers from two separate teams of astronomers have identified this monumental reservoir of water, considered one of the furthest and most extensive ever detected in the universe. Its size is incomprehensible, surpassing the combined water mass of Earth by an astounding 140 trillion times.

However, despite its astronomical scale, this cosmic water source remains virtually invisible to telescopic observation due to its proximity to a massive quasar, situated over 12 billion light-years away from our planet.

Matt Bradford, a scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, expressed the significance of this revelation: “The environment around this quasar is unique in that it’s producing this huge mass of water. It’s another demonstration that water is pervasive throughout the universe, even at the very earliest times.”

Quasars, known for emitting immense energy, are formed around supermassive black holes at the centers of active galaxies. A specific quasar, APM 08279+5255, served as the focal point for the astronomers’ studies, housing a black hole 20 billion times more massive than the Sun and generating energy equivalent to a thousand trillion suns.

The groundbreaking findings included the detection of numerous spectral markers of water, providing insights into the extraordinary mass of this cosmic reservoir. What stunned scientists was the presence of water vapor in the early stages of the universe, a phenomenon never previously observed despite water being scattered throughout the Milky Way, predominantly in frozen ice.

To expand our understanding of the cosmos, astronomers proposed constructing a 25-meter telescope in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Despite initial plans to build this telescope, named the Fred Young Submillimeter Telescope, funding constraints have unfortunately stalled its development.

This remarkable discovery of a 12-billion-year-old water reservoir challenges our understanding of the universe’s early stages and hints at the ubiquitous nature of water across the cosmos.
